Hey Wayne,
Another option would be to select the polygons of the edge that you want to divide and then use the knife tool; works pretty well for me.

what works most of the time for me in cases like this is to subdivide
just once - this single loop will be straight.
Then select the loop and run a bevel command on it. Tweak distance and
amount of subdivisions to get your desired result.
