I don´t want to promote XP64bit as the holy grail, I meant that one should definitely run a test on a (cheap) 64bit box prior to moving over completely.
Regarding Photoshop and the other 32bit apps, it´s maybe just that I´m unhappy with the current state of development, seems everyone making the business decisions decided to wait for Vista with their 64bit ports (except Softimage, thanks for that) and we´re now somewhat stuck with legacy stuff not coping too well with large scenes and filesizes, which in a way is quite a showstopper and slows down development and artistic freedom quite a bit.
Blazingly fast CPU´s but no way to feed them reliably...
Cheers

P.S: I didn´t suggest a dualboot because rebooting sucks.
Get a monitor DVI switch instead (if you can find one that
supports DualHead DVI 23"-30" flatscreens, ah wait, there
is none yet. But at least everything is dongled and licensed
to death correctly and all apps got a nice facelift to fancy
lately (>AE), who cares about memorylimits then?)

Guten Tag Tim Leydecker,
its exactly what I have here on my desk, but XP64 realy s***s and I could not find any advantage when running (until it kept crashing for the lack of drivers...). So better stay with the 32bit XP.
I have my system dual boot, once XP32 and Suse10.1 and it works fine and installation was rather easy.

Hi Kris,
The cheapest way to test things without sinking too much money would be to go for an AthlonX2, AM2 socket and 4GB Ram, should be around 600 Euros, add 150 Euros if you take two 2GB Dimms instead of 4 1GB DDR2 Dimms.
Some 200 Euros for peripherals and chasis and another 120 Euros for that mandatory XP64bit license should do.
Personally; I´m incredibly p**ed off about all the current incompabilities, softwarelimitations and especially those famous known limitations nobody cares to fix but simply flags as "unsupported". I´m not even sure wether Adobe officially supports XP64bit at all either?
Other than that, I don´t know. I long for a more convenient life.
Cheers
tim

Subject: OT: OS/platform advice
I'm looking to maybe buying a new workstation soon and I need some OS/platform
advice. I'm a bit torn between Linux and Windows (and possibly MAC). I've been
using PC/Windows for years. I've always preferred Windows simply for its
convenience.....It can run anything out there. I need it to do this because I will
use just about any tool or plugin I can get my hands on. I hate to be limited due
to OS concerns.
I would love to take the the plunge and go the Linux route but a big problem for me
is no Photoshop (not sure why the hell Adobe STILL doesn't have a Linux version
out). I know I can use a separate machine for that but I was looking to avoid that
if possible.
Mac is possibly an option but again, there are some compatibility issues there.
Lots of software out there can not run on MAC. Being that I'm an XSI user, I need
to make sure I can quickly utilize any plug-in, addon, shader that becomes
available and not worry about compatibility. I also don't know if I can get used
to the different keyboard, mouse layout stuff. I know there are workarounds for
all this but it basically all comes down to simplicity and quick execution for me.
Also there is the whole 32bit vs. 64bit issue. I would love to go 64bit but that
also shrinks my compatibility pool as well. Anyway, just looking to get a little
advice. I'm a freelancer who works from my home studio mostly now. I'm not a big
code guy either so scripting to do things like move files and make folders is just
stupid, slow and not fun for me :-)
Any info is greatly appreciated.
