moving an animated tail problem

Hi,
I'm using the xsi tail to create a swimming motion on an eel creature, 
I'm simply rotating the root of the tail to do this.
I would now like to animate the position of the creature along a path, 
but to have the tail continue its swimming motion.
When I do this the tail animation is lost.
Anyone have advice an how I could achieve this please ?
