I had a guy undiplomatically scoff at my day rate and
tell me "Well, most of the people here didn't come for
the paycheck". Great, so I get to work longer hours
on your out of control project, relocate, AND get paid
less? SIGN ME UP! (not) It just sounded too much like
the old days when I was fresh out of art school. I
would get offers to do work for nothing, but I had the
assurance that I would be allowed to put it on my
reel. Yeah, no thanks, I need to pay rent.
If I thought it would have done any good, I would have
asked him if he took a pay cut for the priviledge of
working there too.
Now, that being said, I have cut my rate for some
projects.
You have to be sure that the people who are calling on
behalf of your company are not adversarial. If the
guy who is trying to hire me is a jerk, it makes me
wonder what the rest of the management is like!
