.obj works, but only for single UV sets. .xsi does multiple UVs and is better at also keeping the hierarchy etc. intact. Hard edges are usually lost ith both, though.

I routinely use .xsi to go between Maya and XSI. If that fails XSI5 has Pointoven support, which might do the trick for you.
