actually, on that note...

does anybody have a technique for arbitrary displacement in mental ray, i.e. not necessarily along the surface normal? This was a big topic not long ago in the PRman circles and I wonder if the same thing is possible in metal ray?

have you tried a displacement map?

Is there any alternative so Helge's magnet tool?  I tried using it but
its constantly crashing on me.  It seems to only work with very low res
meshes.  I'm trying it on a sphere with a bit more detail and its not
working.  I thought I saw something similar to his magnet tool posted
here awhile back but I can't find it.  I'm basically looking to push
geometry inwards like a peg pushing on a balloon.  The peg moves around
so the deformation needs to follow the peg.  I trying using volume
deforms on nulls that are driving the surface but that doesn't give me
quite the same effect.  Soft bodies are too unpredictable and
uncontrollable.  I tried using lattice as well but thats not quite
responding accurately enough.  This is one type of deformer XSI really
needs...could be very handy.
