Weeeell - I know something about that. My opinion is that the low cost
of the software and hardware, along with the availability of free
tutorial info on the internet and video, killed off organized (for
profit) training.
People just can't see spending more on the training than they do on the
software.
Of course training is no less necessary, so the burden is moving to the
production facilities to provide entry training and ongoing tool
training to the staff.
I expect that more and more production facilities will have permanent
training departments, and those that are not large enough will have
ongoing relationships with freelance trainers.
At the Barnyard, one thing we got right was providing training to all
the people who came in (at least, after I showed up there). I think
the classes could have been longer.
I'd recommend something like one week of solid training for ALL new
hires to a production, covering not just the software tool use, but
also the current production pipeline, and of course the
plot/characters/ and stuff like the organizational hierarchy of the
production company, etc. etc.
Training should be considered PART of the pipeline, just as staff
should.
