On a feature, 1 is "easily" dealt with so long as you can find the right people, 2 is not absolutely necessary (you can always use another package for that, and it wouldn't make XSI not the main package used on said feature... (watch the double negative) ), 3 as far as the SDK goes, they need to open it up, give us more hooks, clean it up (its fairly inconsistent in places and unpredictable at times), but mostly give us more hooks, expose more to us! (having the ability to pipe data in and out of a live session of XSI would be good too, having to rely on batch and running scripts is a little tedious...), making it more pipeline friendly... solidifying the scripting languages support (python especially!) and keep on expanding the SDK etc...

The problem we've experienced the most is not with animators and artists, (they love XSI, and being able to remap the keys to fit a maya workflow has been really really helpful), it's been mostly with TDs from all types of backgrounds who just find it really painful to work with the SDK in its current state (as of 4.2 anyway).
A lot has been added to it since 5 so it will be interesting to see how that changes peoples minds and attitudes... It's getting better all the time, it's just a big investment for studios to switch especially since they've developed entire pipelines around Maya which they'd need to pretty much rewrite and redevelop for XSI. I'm not saying it's not happening, but it's somewhat of a deterrent...

That's a good question. Since students often chose software on the

it (as the core application)... but that is difficult since few people
use it...

catch 22

And for XSI to be used more in feature film they need (and this is my
point of view even though I have NEVER worked on a CG heavy film.. so
take it with a grain of salt).

1.) Open up for renderman compliant engines
2.) Get their act together with particles
3.) Dont make the SDK docs a life long search
4.) Improve the IK tools

But I might be wrong, perhaps the problem also lies else where. Would
be fun to hear what the RSP people has to say since they used 3delight
over mental ray.
