I'm not sure if you are referring to me as I know there is another Raffaele, but since I kind of want to throw my two cents %-}

I have extensive knowledge in both XSI/Jscript and Maya/Mel, and I do agree the XSI SDK is harder to get use to. The framework is better then what Maya has to offer (mostly because its an older simpler framework, for the SDK engine). But the main problem which makes Maya very TD friendly is that every command is echo'ed in the script console, so you can always one way or another hack together a script solution to your problem. In XSI you have know how to access object and deal with them which is'nt always obvious since you are really using JScript (which is provided by Mircrosoft, not SoftImage - at least to my understanding).

The trick to any production is that layer of TD tools you build to make your pipeline work, and automate the repetitive tasks. Its nice to think that non-technical artist have an easy time getting into XSI, its easy. But to handle larger production you will always need to build in some sort of automation (in your pipeline) which is weher TDs come in.

So I would really like to see a better more intuitive straight through approach to help TDs figure out what commands to use and how.

Cheers,
RSM

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm simply relaying what I've been hearing from a

problems I come across... I came in late on this discussion and hadn't read
all the posts about TDs needing more time to get accustomed to the SDK and
the arsenal of tools it provides etc and I agree with it, however I've met a
few people that have been more than frustrated with it too (which didn't
help the learning curve). Actually, the guy who single handedly wrote our
entire Renderman exporter never stops bitching about it and although I don't
always agree with him, he does make some valid points (and just for the
record, he also happens to be one hell of a smart cookie)... Raff can
confirm...

The problem we've experienced the most is not with animators and artists, (they love XSI, and being able to remap the keys to fit a maya workflow has been really really helpful), it's been mostly with TDs from all types of backgrounds who just find it really painful to work with the SDK in its current state (as of 4.2 anyway).

Personally, I find that quite extraordinary and my observation has been
that it's not the case at all. I certainly don't believe that the Maya SDK
is better than the XSI one.
