Hey Dave -- I'm not doing a normal map :) I meant that the results of running the image node directly into the bump looked like the results of using my bump like a normal map, i.e. the value at the lookup point is used as the normal rather than perturbing the normal with the map's gradient. Sorry for being unclear.. I'll try fussing around with it again, though. I think I must be doing something wrong....

A) a normal map
B) you have to remap the image to (-1,  1)  so run the image thru 2 color basics  (math nodes)

The first color basic subtracts  0.5
the second multiplies by 2 (though sometimes I've found better results going higher than 2)
