Do you want a background image to show behind your render without compositing later?
If so, you can use a background pic shader.
Pass>Edit>Edit Current Pass
Click the output shaders tab.
Click add.
Choose 2D_background_pic and click ok.
Select the 2D_background_pic shader in the Stack window.
Click inspect.
Choose your background image.
Render
Note: BG image will not show till the entire frame is rendered.

Do you mean you want to matte something out?
If so, you can apply a lambert and turn it off, this matting out your object and in its alpha too.
