i recently found the constant shader doing its job on the easy kind of
shot, where you just need a matte object.
make it black and push the alpha to 0. the you have a matte that
obscures objects but doesnt show up in alphas.

if you need it to catch shadows, plug a shadow node into the shadow of
the material node. voila...
