Hey all you MUST check out unfold 3d, It has been a miracle tool here at Janimation. It seems expensive for what it does, but it paid for it self in days.

Yeah....this really bugs the hell out of me as well. You should be able to export the stamp at whatever resolution you want and whatever aspect ratio. I would really like to see a robust pelt mapping tool of some sort too. Helgee's is pretty cool, but it would be nice to have something a little more straight forward. Modo has some really nice UV tools. Was drooling over some of that at Siggraph.
