its the nature of the beast for the mean time.
an override creates a copy of a material, applies it and
locks all its parameters.
which is fine; providing you never want to edit again.
the material that becomes unassigned will be reconnected if you switch
back to default pass (assuming its not overridden here)
moral of the story, no, you havent done anything wrong.
it just feels like it.
i passively lobby to have this fixed occasionally.
