Yeah...I've been running through products to replace my simple Intellimouse Explorer. The only other really good mouse I've found is a Belkin Bluetooth:  http://buy.ebonza.com/Computers/Storage-Memory/101346 tad bit expensive but it's quite nice.

I've also had bad luck with the MS explorer 4...bad middle button. More concerned with strafing than middle clicking...and with the Logitechs you need to download extra software and setup app-specific behavior that seems to drop out randomly.

I tried re-mapping the middle mouse click to a thumb click as well, and after about 2 weeks it started driving me crazy. It sticks sometimes, and also, it's amazing that at least with me, once you contract your thumb, 'fine motor' seems to become more 'gross motor' .....horribly annoying.

I'd be interested to know what you decide upon and how satisfied you are.

Best,

Scott

I've had my fair share of problems with mx1000, but I still use them,
just because I cannot find any better. Logitech replacement policy is
rather user friendly:).
Yes, that's true it's practically impossible to buy a mouse with real
middle button, not some wheel thing.
