buy an old sgi, they come with excellent mouses ;-)

the one I have know is the cheapest I ever bought, and the best.
its a Trust wired optical ami 250 s. Cost me 6 euro I think.
nothing fancy but fits perfectly in my hand (Im a leftie), has the perfect weight, responsiveness, no drivers, no issues ever.
I can go and click like crazy all day without hurting, and I did have problems with that in the past.

Yeah, it seems the more expensive the mouse, the more issues arise with the graphics software.

This is the mouse I use and it works perfectly with no drivers. The middle mouse button doesnt act weird like some of the other mice I've tried, so like Luc-Eric, I've stockpiled about 3 of these just in case. The middle mouse button on this one is somewhat stiff but overall it seems to work with no hassle for all the programs I've used it with.

my 2 cents : That cheap beige Microsoft mouse is IMHO the best over its more expensive siblings. The middle mouse button doesn't have the problem the other wheel buttons do, like being too high, slippery or hard to push. It's also suprisingly better at optical tracking on any surface than the newer mice. In fact, it is so good I am stocking a few extra in case Microsoft drops the model. (MS often drops hardware, like the Elite Keyboards II, and takes decisions like dropping the Insert button or changing them around) There is no need to install drivers to use mice, and they also work flawlessly on linux or the mac. I avoid installing mouse drivers, or hardware that require them.
