Yes we did this for Barnyard quite a bit actually to change referenced 
models, since some scenes were so heavy. I think Steve Caron and Jentzen 
Mooney were using it for textures as well, but I don't remember specifics. 
Our filesystem forced everything to lower case though, so perhaps that is 
why we didn't have any issues.

lowercase. I made changes in them to restore the "true" paths (mixed
cases). When I open the scene, the resolved paths are still lowercase.

Unless I have missed something, I mean, why are source paths exposed
in the scntoc if you can make such modifications????
