Regarding the Quad Core Xeons - I just tested a box fresh in from my hardware pusher - it was 4,8 times faster at pure raytracing than my dual Xeon 3,4 GHz i bought a year ago!

I am waiting for the pricetag, but it makes sense to get one of those to replace yor renderboxes instead of forking out for more MR licenses.

And I couldn't care less about directX and Vista :)

It´s interesting what it may bring, dozens of different versions, all sorts of rating and licensing system specs, quite some extra CPU usage and a semitrans interface.

But I still don´t know wether Vista will actually support
more than two CPU sockets and more than 1.5 GB or
by luck even 3 GB RAM per process :- )

In a way I can understand this isn´t too interesting when
being on the lookout for a new, unlimiting system/setup...

That said, check out the new Xeon QuadCores, especially
the 2,33 and 2,66 GHz ones around the corner, a *normal*
workstation would therefor contain 8 cores, fully fueling one
of the current XSI 5.1 advanced license (not counting batch)
without any speedpenalty hit on the network (exept served files).

Given that mR 3.5 coming with 3DS Max seems to be free
in terms of mR batchrendering, new things _really may get a boost...

My girlfriend is in NYC currently, so I took my gained freedom
(I´m having fun here ;-( and spec´ed a machine in Dell´s US online
store based on the Precision 490 (or 690?) 64bit workstation customizer:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/reftopic.aspx/pub/products/precn_kat?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz&~section=490

Mine came out at about $7500, including a 30" screen and 8GB Ram,
didn´t order that DualQuadXeon Beast but enjoyed it alot anyway...
Now if only my girlfriend comes back before I´m tempted to
push that damn luring "order" button here...or wait where´s my Vis(t)a...

One thing that I wonder is how it performs with dual screens. I've
seen the 6800GTX do well under Windows, but then not so great under
Linux (hence why I want to hear for the linux people).

And I couldn't care less about directX and Vista :)

On a side not Nvidia have just released the 9269 driver for linux

so far :D
