You just have to put the entries into your rayhost file with the
standalone port.

eg

satellite_computer:7004
mrstandalone_computer:7040


fwiw, it even says on the softimage web site that you can do it.

You mean 20 mental ray standalones? Actually, I think you can. Right
from the get-go mental ray was designed to distribute tiles and I
remember setting it up way back when it was a standalone with SI|3D.

Why not just give it a go?
