I've used FBX to transfer XSI info into C4D and
had pretty good results. Animation, geometry,
cams and most lights seem to transfer well (it
didnt seem to like point lights) it doesnt like
texture information and shader net works but it
does keep the shader colour. I have had trouble
with exporting very large scenes, not sure if i
just get impatient and kill XSI or if it
actually hangs. By the sounds of it, for what
you want to do you might get a good chunk of
information out of XSI across to C4D with FBX
and as you plan on re-shading anyway it might be worth checking out.
Hi folks,
here's a first update on the data transfer.
I exported the c4d files to FBX 6.0 in Cinema 4D.
No hassles there. In XSI 4.2 Fdn I tried to
import via the 2006.12 FBX addon. No dice. Every
scene would hang at either 2 or 3% progress and
the freeze. I could still cancel the import
process and revert back to XSI but just a small
part of the original scene was there. Close to
despair I tried to import the scene again, using the old FBX 6.0 plugins.
Et voilà, everything was there in a moment. I was
amazed, the whole scene was imported including
basic shader information such as color,
transparency, reflectivity & such. To my further
astonishment it had imported the whole thing into
a really nice, clean hierarchy keeping the proper
names. A nice feature of the FBX plugin allows
you to scale the scene down/up by a given factor
which I did, otherwise the scene would have been
a couple of thousand units across.
Presently I'm build my light rig for the scene
including a hemisphere the sky & such and I'll
begin texturing tomorrow. Will keep you posted on
the progress and any problems that arise.
Best regards, Dave
