You're limited to 10 smb connections but this doesn't apply to tcp/ip
connections - NFS runs through tcp/ip not smb so shouldn't be restricted,
although NFS on windows isn't that common. All this means is that only 10
connections that require files to be served from standard windows -xp, nt,
2k, etc - are allowed. For all practical purposes you'll probably find that
the limit is closer to 6, maybe 7 at tops on a small network, becoming fewer
as the network grows because it includes open browsers from any machine -
local included - that are connecting using network file paths (unc or drive
maps). The really annoying thing is that it also includes localhost, which
uses the local loopback and is really a local connection. Remember also that
these connections remain open for a while, usually longer than MS tell you
they do. The most annoying thing about it is that you can't rely on being
able to safely render from any given number of machines because you can
never tell who's going to browse to your machine's file system or how long
they'll be connected.

In a nutshell, Deadline can probably have as many connections as it likes
but the processes it spawns may not be able to see the file server.

Another good reason to use Linux.
