In my hiring contract I added a clause that says “The employee hereby shall be allowed to surf the net or watch movie whenever he’s simulating/rendering and that all his machine are slowed down by the process except his personal laptop.” ;)

 

That’s second phase VFX artist description pretty much. First phase is actually prototyping and that goes pretty fast and you don’t have time to surf or watch movies or play Wii with vfx pals. ;)

Voodoo.  That's a perfect analogy.  I always likened it to alchemy or some other non-exact science.

 

Knowledge is useful, but not as more as patience and lots of luck.  Make sure you bring your lucky rabbit's foot.  Talking nicely/threats to the computer seem to help sometimes.

 

Blood sacrifice not necesary, but I can't say since I haven't tried it... Yet.
