You shouldn't need to do anything quite that drastic in this case. Just reset the preference as Stephen described.

It's quite common for scripts to temporarily toggle this setting off to avoid popping lots of PPGs while running, and then toggle it back on when finished. However, sometimes a script fails to turn it back on, or quits abnormally, and the preference is left changed. 

As Luc-Eric points out, as of v5.1 XSI doesn't allow scripts to permanently change that pref, so you shouldn't see this setting getting mysteriously switched off anymore.

its a behavior I have seen as well.
Something to do with the users folder 

c:users\softimage

I delete it and the next time you open XSI your prob wil be resolved.. be careful though to back up anything you need, script or toolbar wise that reads from your users folder...
