 Been reading this thread with interest, maybe it's a bit late to come in...
but I'd be interested to know from anyone who's used other API's which one's
they like most and why. Not just talking about 3D API's, just API's in
general, in any language - is there a perfectly designed API out there which
we can learn something from?

This is definitely the best designed API I've ever seen http://www.trolltech.com/products/qt/ I wouldn't go as far as to say it's perfect, but it's certainly elegant. (Though even with this one you'll get some C++ purists complaining about).
