Try deactivating the "Reload Externally Modified Images On Focus" option in the preferences. It's in the Rendering part. I know it's has been responsible for such delays in the past for some people.

my xsi 6 suffers from lag and its DAM annoying. If i use xsi then open up an internet browser or open up my computer etc. Basically any other program apart from xsi. Then go back to xsi it just sits there daydreaming for about 30 seconds before it realises i'm trying to use it. previous versions have never had this problem, on my ageing machine
