It might not help this specific issue, but have you tried changing the scale?  For large comps like that I work most of the time in 1:4, switch back occasionally to get a clearer look.

That makes a huge difference, and based on my past experience, I think it's probably a bigger cpu hog than the thumbnail refresh.

I don't think they did something in 6.0 ..
this is a Workflow killer.definitively.
