3ds import in 6 broken

i need to import a 3ds file into xsi 6
i go to import > import 3ds
navigate to where the 3ds file is located.
i choose the file press ok
then it brings up a .xsi import options box.
it seems the import 3ds file option in the import menu is broken and 
wants to import a .xsi file instead.
