Even setting up relatively few passes could get messy pre-5.11. I've got
render options setup scripts scattered over half the planet, although I'm
pretty pleased now that they're completely obsolete.

They _are_ more complicated. But they're also more logical, and they
allow more.
I'm currently working on stereoscopic previz shots. I have to render
two passes with exactly the same render options except for
the camera.
The new options make it much more easier to manage.
