Frustrating isnt it?  One of the more surpising things I noticed when moving from Lightwave to XSI.   I dont know when last Edharriss.com was updated - they've had the same 'newest tutorial' up there for over a year.  I've heard it said that the reason XSI's community is so lacklustre is because its members are busy doing actual work.   Most tutes and shaders are so old they no longer work or apply - if you can find a working link.  I dont know if things were more active back at version 
1.0 to 3.0 - but it seems that way

That said, I have found that the forums and mailing lists are very responsive - and as long as your question isnt too stupid, or Lightwave-related, people are more than willing to help ;)

But training oneself up by looking up free tutes.. an exercise in frustration.
