When I worked at Quietman, I called that the "Shirk Effect".
Often when I was having trouble, I would spend time messing around trying to get it to work... So then I would bug Dave Shirk to get up and help me out, it would mysteriously start to work.
It's like Murphy's law, only the amount going wrong seemed to be inversly proportional to my proximity to Dave Shirk. It was his old workstation, "Mandimus", maybe it just missed him?
