The idea with the iTunes music store is that you pay less for the album and you get it immediately, it's convenient. It's not 10$ necessary to own something for the rest of your life. What's 10$ anyway.
Also this is at least one advantage to DRM, it's renting movies and music, like subscription music services which Apple is rumoured to offer in the future. It allows you rent music with a flat fee per month, so you can try at your convenience all sorts of artists and albums you would not normally give a shot to, including new artists.
