This is true. I've worked with a DP that was always telling me the lens in 35mm equiv even though we were shooting in HD. I had to constantly remind him that I didn't care about 35mm equiv. I want the exact focal length because my conversion depends on it.

Yeah, you'll never ever encounter the vast majority of the ones on wikipedia. From what I understand, a lot of stuff from the era before digital intermediates was shot on academy, and these days a lot more stuff is shot full aperture, .98x.735, then cropped to a particular aspect ratio. Another thing to be aware of is that with the smaller format digital cameras, lens information is sometimes talked about in terms of 35mm film, because that's what everyone knows. So, if someone is talking about a 35 mm lens, they're often talking about a 35mm lens on 35mm film, not a 35mm telephoto lens for a digital camera. In fact, exif headers on digital camera images sometimes include hypothetical 35mm lens info as one of the fields. It really sort of depends on who you're talking to, what their background is, and whether they're talking about the shot in the abstract or sitting with a camera in-hand, ready to shoot the actual footage.

Thanks!
