The only one I can think of is whether you have projects in your project list that point to shares/unc paths that are long gone. XSI might be trying to resolve the texture path to all potential projects (don't ask why, it makes baby Jesus cry).

Or could it be a rights problem?
Once I also had a strange problem where two different network path  
created funny effects. Due to multiplexing. But I don;t think you are  
connecting through a WAN...
