Subject : Re: ultimapper/rendermap displacement problem
My personal experience using Ultimapper or any such tool available in other 3d packages is that this whole technology is to be called unprecise at best. It works very well for organic structures, but as soon as you get technical you quickly get to the limits. Morphing a sphere into a perfect cube like you currently try is ambitious at least. I'd wonder if you get that working the way you want.

Sorry for not being more of a help, cheers!

Hello <<displacement_problem.jpg>>

Has anyone come across this problem (See attached picture). This is a very
simple example to demonstrate the problem and as the mesh gets subdivided
the problem becomes less visible but it is still a problem. Using
ultimapper, rendermap, the vector displacement tool from Ben Togal (thanks
ben) and even our own in house tool to get a displacement map based on the
difference between the sphere and the cube produces the quilting distortion
that you see in the picture. I tried all sorts of things but can't get round
it. It seems fundamental.

Has anyone come across this/ have a solution?

Thanks

Alastair
