Unless you want to have the explorer as a separate window, you could just edit the layout and add an additional pane on the left side which can house an explorer. That way you'd always have an explorer tucked at the left side of xsi, no matter if it's windowed or full screen.

each time I restart xsi, it resets my main window to fullscreen,
meaning a loss of precious seconds while I arrange everything again.
any way to force xsi to save the window positions?

no its not important (but i thought i'd ask), yes i've laid it out
like maya, no, i'm not sorry.  ;)
