in V6, using the render region as a coordinate system for subregioning seems to have vanished, either that or it has relocated somewhere I have yet to dig up. 

You can render based on selected objects as well, which sounds like it would do the job you're looking for.

Check in the render > pass options I believe. There is a checkbox for using selected objects
