No, wouldn't be difficult at all. And yes, the Scalar State -> Gradient -> whatever input was the intended way to do this :) I'll think of something simple and update the shader soon(ish).

Would it be long/hard to implement a way to have the hair root start with a color and then gradually mix with a different one for the tip?

 

It could probably be achieved with the "scalar state" node set to barycentric lengthwise hair and a gradient texture map but it's kind of clunky…
