Hey all,=20
I'm gonna try an attempt at cartoon fur, and wondered what =
thoughts/experiences/methods people might be willing to share - =
something akin to this example I picked up from cartoonbrew: =
http://www.mattmos.com/xs/fur_example.jpg except with an ink outline.
The character will be 3d but needs to look 2d, so the fur needs to look =
good from different angles, most important is keeping the clean outline, =
basically always trying to make it look drawn and considered, rather =
than a 3d spikey thing.=20
Ridiculous idea? Do it in 2d?
Cheers,=20

<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I had to do this exact type of thing =
years ago when=20
doing Warner Bros like stuff. I was using Softimage|3D back then, =
but I=20
solved it by creating some cones and surface deformed them to the body =
so they'd=20
follow the body whatever it did. I hid the inkline seam between =
the cone=20
and body using the toon shader's hide ink object list. The toon =
shader has=20
all the incidence controls you may need to alter ink line tapering and=20
such. If something is missing, you can probably work around it in =
the=20
rendertree. Overall it's a bit labor intensive to make all the =
cones and=20
distribute them, but it gives you a lot of hands-on control later on =
when you=20
need it to fine tune the effect. I'd advise against particle =
systems or=20
hair systems because it unnecessarily complicates things when you try to =
squash=20
n' stretch the character in the animation process. Cartoons are =
supposed=20
to be fun, spontaneous, and very loose - you lose that with automated =
systems=20
driving parts of your character as they can't match the human=20
touch.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>On the flipside - if you need the hair =
to have the=20
exact same profile/silhouette regardless of what the character does, =
then I'd=20
say you'd be best off making the character out of 2D grids a la =
SouthPark or=20
Blues Clues. You still retain the benefits of a 3D workflow as you =
can rig=20
characters for fully automated and customized control, but can also push =
operations to the compositor for speed as an option.</FONT></DIV>
