By "answer" I didn't mean confirmation email. I mean having someone
from Softimage spending enough time on your problem to give you the
heads up about what to expect as a usable feedback.
I'm pretty sure that most new problems submitted to Softimage, no
matter their origin, are evaluated. However as soon as it turns out to
be an issue that requires investigation from a developer, not being on
maintenance will not guarantee that additional resources will be put
on your problem. You may be lucky and get a solution, an alternative,
or even a fix. In most cases you will get an email that acknowledge
the issue. But more severe and not widely reported problems may stay
unaddressed for undetermined periods.
So when you're not on maintenance, you can report the problem, that
may help the whole community if there is a problem really specific to
XSI. For anything else, all is left are forums, mailing lists and
frustrations :-)

As with all my previous communication with Softimage,
all bugs I´ve logged sofar resulted in at least a confirmation
e-mail (containing the UDEV Number) even thought I have
no active maintenance subscription currently.
On that note, I´ll likely be getting XSI maintenance soon,
*feels* worth the money and is also just half the price
compared to the Autodesk Maya *Platinum* pricetag...
