how about a script that clustered each point - constrained a null to each cluster - plot transforms for each null - then take the original mesh and cluster centre all of the points - then constrain the cluster centres to the original nulls
 
might work

Thanks for that Kai...I tried it but unfortunately I had the same issues as with Point Oven and XSI's shape plot...seems as though the fault is fundamentally within XSI but with some great support from Softimage I've managed to find a viable workaround.
