I have used Moneygram http://www.moneygram.com/index.htm to pay for services in the US. The fees are paid on this end at the Moneygram Agent.

Check the fees in comparison with Paypal. They are as common in malls as Thomas Cook etc. and the cool thing is YOU can pick up the money in hundreds of outlets in the US including many bottle stores J

Thanks for the info. In my situation, I'm in the US and my client is in South Africa. I may use paypal if fees are to be expected. Is it customary to incur the transfer fees yourself or ask the client to pick them up?

Yes, it sure is. As long as you and your client are outside of the
EU. Here, it's pretty easy and costs nothing (given you're using bank
transfer with IBAN/BIC). Switzerland is also handled that way.
