One would probably want this to be more automated, even if it's only a few
machines.

I've done this with great success on windows using the pstools. The Windows
installer for xsi is just an executable archive which can be extracted.
Linux is probably a tarball.

Hi Sandy,

If you've got XForwading on in your sshd_config then you can attach
with ssh -Y and then run X applications on your rendermachines and
have the gui show on your current machine.

It works fine on a lan, but it's not a very bandwidth friendly
protocol so over the internet it's really really really etc. slow.
