Thanks everyone for the suggestions! We don't need em for "optical
correctness", but the "movie spheres" that I've seen also has a
"lambert" backside which is handy since you then don't need to bring
to many of them to set.
The one we have now is a small one about 4 inches in diameter, and
getting a tad old... and not even to mention that it's now cracked and
must be ducktaped together :)
Anyhow, thanks for the input!
best regards
stefan

UNless you need optically perfect results (like for REALLY clean hi-res
reflection maps to be relfected razor sharp) then the garden gazing balls
work quite well. They are available in a variety of sizes. Something like
this:
http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Stainless-Steel-Gazing-Globe/dp/B000OTA1LA
Though we buys our locally for around $25US for the 10inch. They have a
collar on them that can be easily made to fit on a 5/8" stud (like a
C-stand) with a simple bushing you can drill out of wood or something
similar.
They are not optically perfect by any means, but they make a great HDR
capture for lighting, and also just fine for most reflections maps,
unless, as I mentioned above, you have something requiring perfect
reflections.
