15 minute save time with instances in scene

Subject : 15 minute save time with instances in scene

I have a scene with about 2000 instances in it. 
Saving across a gigabit network takes 15 minutes,
saving locally  takes less than one minute.

We've been saving locally and copying the file to the
server.  Anyone know why this would be happening?

Is it a problem with the network or XSI?
