I remember the old Soft|3D days. The subregion only saved the little part of the frame that was rendered. It was such a pain. When we rendered a patch for a render that had a glitch, we had to take note of the x and y coordinates of the region to apply the same offset in comp.
Mental ray then came in and solve all that by rendering a complete frame.
