Wow. That's way too big and costly! You're basically asking for
maintenance on user submitted scripts and plug-ins?

[Matt]
No. I'm saying XSI Net should be a user's direct connection to tech =
support and Softimage should focus tasks towards automating / =
streamlining the ability for users to keep the software on their machine =
up to date and trouble free. Users should be able to specify when to =
accept / deny updates, or roll back to previous incarnations in an =
intelligent fashion as well as manage their own setups.

Netview should be able to access a centrally located depository for the =
user submitted stuff, but only submissions developed by Softimage should =
be included in XSI Net. User submissions should be organized separately =
at a place like XSIBase.com or wherever the userbase and find without =
hassle. That's where you can put a user rating system in place if so =
desired. The problem I see with a central depository is that it's very =
difficult to properly organize such a database in an intelligent fashion =
because users have different terminology to describe the same thing and =
often put tools into the wrong category when a tool can serve multiple =
purposes. Basically, a lot of tools get written and submitted that =
don't need to exist in the first place.

People know that if they try something free from another user then
they're usually on their own. (script, plug-in, shaders)

[Matt]
I strongly disagree. Majority of the clients I've trained are new to =
XSI. They think whatever they can access through the software (ie: =
netview) is covered by Softimage support, or developed by Softimage. =
You put unregulated user stuff in Netview, and my clients think it's =
part of the deal - not joking. I often field complaint calls from =
clients when tool 'xyz' fails and I have to inform my client they're SOL =
because its joe schmoe's freebie to the world and not natively part of =
XSI. Many of those clients become angry shortly afterwards because they =
feel deceived. But of course, I make them all happy again after I show =
them how to use XSI so they don't need joe schmoe's tool ;-)
