you can by adding to this method a custom param driving an override,
(so for example multiples of same characters can be differentiated)
but requires an exact order of setup, and now you have a kludge of a
kludge :/ It worked in production on a feature but is a very scary
item to be passing around a pipeline due to its fragility and unusual
setup, and forget explaining it to texture/shader artists.
I agree Andy its just an occasionally useful hack, and although i did
with my fingers crossed, its not something to make standard in a mid
to large production.
