Hi Fabian,
In fc3 I have no gaminrc override and it is not started from runlevels. If you have specific info I can deliver I'd be glad to. Installed Ubuntu 7.04 last night and xsi install errors at registering python. XSI starts but can't load scenes. gam_server is not running even if it is installed just as you wrote. Installed Python 2.4 (instead 2.5) removed the whole gnome desktop and installed plain blackbox and couldn't make it run. Installed KDE desktop (turned it to all KUBUNTU) and same thing. gam_server restart makes no difference.

XSI runs mainwin's own version of python, so the problem is related to mainwin but more like as symptom of missing service I believe.

Even if I'd make it run I'd be sceptic to rely on it as workstation, but as secondary system maybe.

sounds like an idea.
could someone running redhat, suse or gentoo post the gaminrc perhaps
and any start-up scripts that might exist. thank you

that kind of error is caused probably by gamin
everything crashing xsi on open or merge is gamin.

in gentoo... gam_server is always running but in ubuntu
theres no process running at all. its supposed to be written
to run not as a daemon. but why in gentoo i have it running
and not in ubuntu.. ive searched how to run it manually but no luck.

i think thats the main issue.

Maybe it will come since even Dell will start to ship it with
        some

        a lot
easier and more convenient than XP. Dont know about vista
        since that
turd is not touching my hard drives.

And just for the record, its mostly free open source and not
        shareware
drivers. The only shareware driver i've got is for the
        printer.

but why on earth can xsi import obj, load clips, etc. but not
        open a
        scene file? any ideas?

        have a nice sunday,
