I just witched all of the creature assets on our current show to the split_SSS shaders. It works like a charm and functions the same as XSI's built in SSS shader.
However, I haven't tried piping split_SSS into a sprite shader as described earlier. Seems like it should work fine... I'll give it a shot later in the day.
