Hi Adam,

Although it will probably cost you in expertise, but I've used and setup 
mySQL database with XSI. You can access it fully trhough any of the 
scripting languages that support activeX control.

The other big advantage, is its completely open, so you can custom build 
php interface which you can tie to XSI, and other apps (not just 3D apps).

The big drawback, you have to set-it up and write the scripting tool to 
access the data.

We used this setup at Omation on Barnyards.
